A wine list for ‘malai kofta’ and fish ‘moily’
Pairing Indian food with wine is iffy and requires imagination. Western cuisine is about extracting flavour from existing ingredients. Indian, and for that matter, most Asian cuisines mask the inherent flavour of the ingredients by adding herbs and spices. The fear is that these spices will overpower the wines. Most of the classic pairings—champagne with caviar; roast lamb with Bordeaux; chèvre with Sancerre; dark chocolate with Cabernet Sauvignon (okay, that last one isn’t classic)—use little or no spices. Hence the stereotype: “Indian food and wine? No way. Swig a beer, instead.”
It is up to Indians to show the wine world how to pair their wines with our food. Here are some suggestions.

Festa della Filoxera, San Sadurni, September 7-8, Spain
Only in Spain could you expect such an eclectic celebration. A visually stunning parade of brightly coloured effigies of phylloxera bugs take to the streets of San Sadurni d’Anoia in Catalonia, illuminated by firecrackers, as the festival goers celebrate the town’s historic victory over the phylloxera invasion of the 19th century.
Vitis vinifera’s greatest weakness is its susceptibility to an aphid called Phylloxera vastatrix. This vine louse was introduced from Californian vines and spread rapidly throughout most of the world’s vineyards during the second half of the 19th century. Phylloxera destroys the root system of the Vitis vinifera, ultimately killing it. There were no effective treatments.
Fortunately, it was noticed that some of the vine species originating in North America, such as Vitis rupestris and Vitis riparia, could cope with Phylloxera. These vines did not produce attractive wines, but by grafting a cutting of Vitis vinifera onto an American vine rootstock, growers were able to replant their devastated vineyards.

Chianti Classico wine festival 5th to 8th September 2011
In 1716 Cosimo III de’ Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany issued an edict legislating that the three villages of the Lega del Chianti as well as the village of Greve and a 2 mile hillside north of Greve near Spedaluzza as the only officially recognized producers of Chianti. This delineation existed until the 1930s when the Italian government expanded the zone. Subsequent expansions throughout the twentieth century would eventually bring the Chianti zone to cover almost all of Tuscany. The original zone dictated by the edict of Cosimo III de’ Medici would eventually be considered the heart of the Chianti Classico region.

Batalla del Vino (Battle of wine), Haro, La Rioja, Spain - June 29
The history of the Batalla del Vino dates back to the 10th century between Haro & the neighbouring town, Miranda De Ebro
After the mass “hell” breaks out… Everybody sprinkles wine on each other. The carriers of some sprinkle equipment heap wine on their prey, although that could be considered cheating. Tradition disctates that botas - bottles made of leather are to be used. However locals carry jugs, bottles, carboys and what ever they can fill with wine!
